The Tenderloin Museum presents Rent Romus’ Lords of Outland and Black Edgar (David Boyce) in concert at the Tenderloin National Forest. Presented as part of TLM’s Sounds of the Tenderloin live music series, this double header of sonic explorers pays homage to the expansive legacy of experimental, and improvised music in the Bay Area and in particular the scene’s robust and dynamic node in the Tenderloin. The TL’s longest running venue for these sounds has been the Luggage Store Gallery’s artist run Creative Music Series, which has hosted new music of all stripes and skill levels weekly since 1991. Improvisor/composer Rent Romus has curated the series since 2002, and to celebrate this pillar of the new music scene in SF, The Tenderloin Museum has invited Romus to perform in the LSG enchanting and intimate outdoor community arts space, the Tenderloin National Forest. Romus’ group, Lords of Outland, will be paired with Black Edgar (David Boyce), for a special afternoon trip through the outer and inner reaches of sonic headspace.
About Rent Romus: Saxophonist and composer Rent Romus is a creative force spanning over twenty years of D.I.Y. music production, performance, and curation. He is known for stretching far beyond the confines of standard music forms, performing his original compositions and improvisations in a wide variety of musical settings. In 1994, Romus leapt further out of the box with the formation of the quartet Lords of Outland – a collective of like-minded musicians focused on exploring modern jazz, free jazz, and sound art. Lords of Outland’s original music ranges from unhinged free jazz improvisation embracing thematic compositional suites inspired by abstract and socio-political poetry, science fiction, horror, and strange fantastic literature. In the spirit of free form experimentation, the group’s roster has changed numerous times throughout its rich history, featuring guests like John Tchicai, James Zitro, Kash Killion, and many others. The current lineup features Ray Schaeffer on bass, Anthony Flores on drums, and Philip Everett on electronics.
About Black Edgar (David Boyce): Don't miss the chance to interstellar travel with Bay Area multi-instrumentalist David Boyce of Broun Fellinis and The Supplicants! Performing as Black Edgar's Musicbox, Boyce masterfully blends his epic effects rig with his brilliant acoustic saxophone playing. Black Edgar's music is a journey inside that extramusical subatomik kosmic space where afrohorns, efx pedals, synths and drum machines are used to conjure jazztronica from another planet. All beats are considered, all sounds embraced.
