"Tenderloin" performed by the Cutting Ball Theater

Join us for a one night only reading of the hit 2012 play!

A documentary theater piece commissioned in 2012 by The Cutting Ball Theater, Tenderloin brings the people and places of the neighborhood into the theater, and brings the theater into the neighborhood.

The script, created by director Annie Elias, was composed from transcripts of over forty interviews, conducted by the actors, of people who lived and worked in the Tenderloin. From these living sketches, a portrait of the Tenderloin itself emerges, honoring the diversity of the people who live and work in this gritty and fascinating downtown San Francisco district.

The portrayals you’ll hear include, among others: Mark Ellinger, long-time resident, photographer and historian of the Central City who was instrumental to the making of Tenderloin; Kathy Looper, owner of the Cadillac Hotel and long-time Tenderloin activist; resident Nappy Chin; Aunt Charlie’s Lounge bartender Colette; former Captain of the Tenderloin Police, Gary Jimenez; Mary Ann Finch whose organization “Care Through Touch” provides massage for the homeless; and Shomari, a city cleaning program worker.

Actors and co-creators from the original production, Tristan Cunningham, Siobhan Doherty, and David Sinaiko, will read excerpts from the best-selling play.

The transcripts, recordings, script and other materials regarding the creation of "Tenderloin" are archived in the San Francisco Public Library.
