Tenderloin Museum is honored to present highlights from The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot play written by Donna Personna, Colette LeGrande, and Mark Nassar as part of the SF Pride 2023 Kick-Off: A Night of Queer Entertainment at the historic Castro Theatre. This June 2nd opening event for Pride month is a fundraiser for the organization that makes Pride come to life each year in San Francisco; attend to support SF Pride, celebrate intergenerational liberation, as well as to hear a special announcement about the future of the play! That’s right, you’ll hear it first at the Castro!
SF Pride’s Kick-Off event surveys the transmission of experience, wisdom, and progress amongst generations through the arts–drag, theater, music, film–at San Francisco’s iconic movie palace at the heart of the LGBTQ+ community. The co-writers/director of The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot will share a staged reading of excerpts from the play in conjunction with a screening of the KQED short documentary about the its 2018 premiere, “A New Generation Gathers Strength from the Courageous Queens of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot.”
The evening will also feature screenings of the films Mrs. Vera’s Daybook and The Girl From 7th Avenue, multi-disciplinary performances by up-and-coming local legends, DJs, dancers, raffles, and a convivial time to mark the start of Pride.
Join us to celebrate SF Pride with this very special engagement of The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot play in one of San Francisco’s most enchanting venues and historic sites for queer culture and community. Tickets are a $20 suggested donation (via Eventbrite), however no one will be turned away for lack of funds–email melissa.dufort@sfpride.org for a no-cost ticket.
