How can space and place inspire the creation of new work? How do we create art that captures the essence of our homes and communities? Join playwright Bennett Fisher and director Jesca Prudencio for a theatrical workshop based on the ideas at the core of Campo Maldito - art inspired by and created for a changing city. In this 90 minute workshop, participants will engage in a creative dialogue and create a collective documentary theater piece inspired by their relationship with the neighborhood, using both material in the Tenderloin Museum, as well as their own personal narratives. This workshop is open to writers, performers, educators, and anyone with story.

About Campo Maldito: People Of Interest’s critically acclaimed production of Campo Maldito returns to San Francisco’s Exit Theatre after its premiere to sold out houses at the UC San Diego’s Wagner Theater Festival, the New York Fringe Festival, and the SF Fringe, where it won the 2014 Best of Fringe Award.

Campo Maldito, (Spanish for “cursed ground”) is a dark comedy about gentrification in San Francisco. When a young CEO of a tech startup – Ken Ingersoll – hires a Santeria priest – Hieronymo Acosta – to purify his office, he gets a lot more than he bargained for. Performed in the heart of the Tenderloin, where the play is set, the production is vivid, frightening, hilarious, and – with rising rent prices and an epidemic of evictions all across the Bay Area – more relevant than ever. This production returns with the original cast Walker Hare and Luis Vega. Since Campo Maldito’s premiere, Fisher and Prudencio continued to collaborate on his premiere of Borealis, and Romulus Kilgore’s Mobile Happiness Bazaar at La Jolla Playhouse’s WoW Festival. Campo Maldito will also be published alongside Bennett Fisher’s play Don’t Be Evil through Exit Press.

About Bennett Fisher (Playwright):

Playwright Bennett Fisher, a Bay area native, is a company member of Campo Santo and an associate artist with the Cutting Ball Theater. His plays has been workshopped and produced nationally at the Kennedy Center MFA Playwright Workshop, Mixed Blood, the Unicorn, Great Plains, Ubuntu Theater Project, Sleepwalkers Theater, No Nude Men, New Conservatory Theater Center, and the Cutting Ball Theater, and many others. He received his MFA at UC San Diego, and was awarded the 2016 Shank Fellowship at Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago.

About Jesca Pudencio (Director):

Director Jesca Prudencio is recently received her MFA at UCSD where she directed highly physical productions of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Will Snider's How To Use A Knife, and three premieres of Bennett Fisher’s plays. She has developed work at East West Players, La MaMa, Old Vic, Joe’s Pub, and Musical Theatre Factory. Jesca is Artistic Associate of Ping Chong on numerous projects nationwide and was the AD on Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She is a 2016 Drama League Fellow currently residing in New York City. Campo Maldito was the inaugural production for her theater company People of Interest – an ensemble dedicated to producing engaging work that provides a voice for the voiceless and addresses contemporary social issues
